[9.21.10] The concert was a huge succcess. We had 176 in attendance and lots of great music! Now, on to next year. [8.20.10] I realized that I'm less likely to update this page now that we have Twitter on the home page. Anyway, less than a month to go, and things are coming together. Should have flyers soon. [6.8.10] Set up PayPal account to take donations on RealNewMusic and RealNewArts Foundation site. We're getting serious now! [5.31.10] RealNewPoetry winner has been announced and the art song competition is now open (see the links to the left). Also, Meet the Composer Creative Connections grant applications have been submitted. [5.4.10] RealNewPoetry contest has closed and the judging has starting. Hope to have a "winner" soon. Also, created a Facebook page. Still some work to do on that, but it's a start. [3.15.10] Time to get some info up on the schedule page. I know it's still a ways off, but there's always work to be done. [1.11.10] Well, it's 2010, so that means another festival in the coming year. There are all sorts of interesting changes afoot, starting with moving the festival from June to September. September 18th to be exact. This move should be a great one for the event! More news soon. [11.9.09] Getting videos up on YouTube and here. Check out the video link under the festival link on the left. [11.4.09] Working on RealNewMusic 2010. We may move it to a little later in the summer. Also, working on getting some videos posted. [7.2.09] Another great concert event for sure. Interesting plans already working for next year. Check back for more details. [6.17.09] Final details coming together. Please help get the word out about the concert. It's going to be a great night! [5.25.09] Happy Memorial Day! Put the press info up today. [5.17.09] We didn't get the amount of song entries we hoped for, but we got a great new piece from Flora Cheng. [4.18.09] Noel Lairson has confirmed. Now we just wait on the art song winners and we'll be all set. [3.16.09] We may have another person for the show. More soon I hope. [3.6.09] Great news - we got the Meet the Composer grant again this year, which is a HUGE help. We're moving along. Song composers - get to writing! [2.23.09] The art song composition is open. Please get the word out to any composers you know. Other than that, the plans are moving forward. Check back regularly for updates. Thanks! [1.11.09] I didn't realize how long it had been since I've posted something here. Changes are happening (mostly a color change to the site) and plans are in the works for RNM 2009. We'll be deciding the winner of the poetry contest soon and I sent in the Meet the Composer application today. Check back regularly for updates. Thanks! [6.22.08] Another great night. Thanks to all who performed and all to came to check it out. Next year will be year 5, so we will have some big plans for sure. Keep checking back for updates. If you want to be involved, please let us know. [6.8.08] Some of us have been interviewed by the Daily News for a feature article. Looking forward to it in the next week or so. Check back for updates. Less than two weeks to go! [6.1.08] Wow, it's June already. We've got flyers available on the Publicity page and it's time to get the word out. [5.20.08] JUST ADDED - BRIAN KEHLENBACH and SUSAN ASBJORNSON! Brian and Susan are going to compose the art songs. Another treat! [5.19.08] JUST ADDED - PAUL BAILEY ENSEMBLE! Paul has agreed to show his latest video with live music project, which just received it's world premiere at the REDCAT on the 17th. It's shaping up to be quite a show. Those of you that have been here before will find some nice additions to the evening. [5.11.08] Happy Mother's Day! I could have sworn that I've posted since January, but apparently not. Well, here's where we're at. We have a winner for the poetry contest and are finishing up the art song composition element. It's hard to believe that we're just a little more than a month away from the next one. Time sure flies! [1.28.08] Happy New Year! Once again it's been too long since I've put something here. Not a lot has happened since the last event, with the exception of starting a non-profit to help this out (www.realnew.org) and a poetry contest (www.realnewpoetry.com) and song competition (see the menu on the left under the "Festival" link). I guess that's a lot, but not much that's visible. We've picked a winner for the song contest and I've started work on the composition competition. Two groups are booked. More in the coming months. [6.24.07] It was a great night last night. My sincere thanks to all who participated and all who attended. Now it's time to start planning for next year. I think I already have one ensemble booked. What a start! [5.6.07] The artists are all inked. We going to have two ensembles and three (with a possible last-minute fourth) song composers. Start telling your friends. It's going to be a great night! [4.16.07] All four song composers are inked. One more group to finalize. [4.4.07] Two groups inked, with a likely third to finalize. One composer is inked for the song part, with a few more in mind. It's coming together! [3.18.07] It looks like it's been a while again (hey, that's got good "lyric" potential). RealNewArts Foundation has been approved as tax-exempt, so we're a real non-profit. Now we can get to work. As for the festival, we're definitely moving forward. Check back soon for updates. [1.14.07] I didn't realize how long it's been since I've posted anything here. Things are defintely moving forward. The non-profit corporation (RealNewArts Foundation) exists and is on the way to gaining non-profit status. We're already approved by the state and are waiting to hear about the federal. I should have an answer within the next 60 days. I have one group inked for the festival this year, and am moving forward on at least one more. I am changing the line-up this year, so that it doesn't end up looking like a showcase for the same groups only. I can assure that they will be asked back for future festivals. I guess that's enough for now. More soon. [9.3.06] The date for RealNewMusic 2007 is inked, and it will be on June 23rd, 2007. Mark your calendars now. Also, I am in the process, along with a few other folks, in starting a non-profit corporation in order to help with the festival. It will be called RealNewArts Foundation. I already have a website started, which is at www.realnew.org. Exciting stuff! [7.18.06] I can't believe I haven't gotten around to updating this after the show. Once again, better late than never. The show went great. We had a little over 100 people in the audience, which is great for a show like this. I'm already working on RealNewMusic 2007, which will be in June again. I've got some plans to grow the event, which includes forming a non-profit to support it. I'll keep things updated here as they progress. I hope everybody's having a relaxing summer. [6.5.06] Great news - the ticket price has lowered. See the "Schedule" page (under "Festival") for more information. [5.25.06] The only thing left to get out are the calendar listings, and those will go out over the next couple of weeks. Please help get the word out. Also, if you can put together a group of ten or more to come to the concert, I have a deal for you. Use the contact form to ask me more about it. [5.19.06] Flyers have been added to the Press page. I'll be sending out the official e-mail soon. [5.7.06] Got a replacement composer! Press info is finished and links are included on the Press page. [5.3.06] Lost a composer, but am working on a replacement. The schedule is more or less set, so we're on our way! [4.22.06] Well, I have inked all of the composers, and this year we will have three ensembles and four songs! We'll be starting at 7:00, so it should be quite a night. Please set the date aside (June 24th), and plan to have a nice evening in Whittier. [4.8.06] I have secured permission to use the poem of choice ("This Moment" by Eavan Boland) and I have one composer for the songs inked. Two more to go and it will all be in place. [3.19.06] It looks like I finally have a chance to get some updating done. I have managed to ink the three groups for this year's festival. They will be the Paul Bailey Ensemble and the Lloyd Rodgers Group (who were both there last year), as well as a new group called Counterpoint Culture, featuring the music of Jon Brenner. I will also have songs like last year, but I am still working on securing rights to use the poem I have selected. More soon! [1.25.06] The official date for RealNewMusic has been set. It is on June 24th and will start at 7:00 p.m. More details to follow in the coming weeks. [8.31.05] Although RealNewMusic 2006 is off in what seems like the distant future, I have already started working on the plans for it. One of the things that I am starting to work on is to secure some funding in order to cover the expenses of the college (and possibly even get some money to pay the performers). If anybody would like to be a sponsor of the festival and have their name in the program (or if you know somebody who would be interested in being a sponsor), please use the contact form to let me know. Any and all thoughts and ideas regarding this are welcome! [6.28.05] Great news! I found out today, while picking up the recording of the concert, that I have been given the green light for RealNewMusic 2006. There is much more planning to be done this time around (with much more time to plan). I know it will take place in mid to late June of next year. Keep checking back for developments. [6.19.05] Well, the show is over. After sleeping in a bit and enjoying a nice Father's Day morning with the wife and kids, I've had some time to process the event. First of all, I have to thank David Palmer, Julie, Allison & Ron at the Shannon Center for all their work (and the ushers too). The night was definitely a success. We had 17 performers (thanks everybody!) and 90 in attendance (thanks to all of you as well), and for a new music concert, that's quite an accomplishment. The night was filled with great music, and those in attendance will probably never hear drums the same way again. Please check out the "Photos" link under "Festival" for some pictures from the day. I'm not sure what will happen next. Some rest is definitely in order. Please check back here regularly for any developments. [6.18.05] It's 8:30 a.m. on the big day! Pretty much everything's been done that can be done up to this point. We're listed in the LA Times and the LA Weekly, plus various other places around the web (including a great site at http://sundayslive.org/newsletter.cfm). I'll get to the theater around 1:45 and spend the rest of the day there (minus a brief dinner break at home - the luxury of living 5 minutes away from the theater) helping to get the performers set. I have the easy job today! I have no idea how many people to expect to see the show tonight, but I'm hoping for at least 100. I guess I'll know soon enough. I hope to see you there! [6.9.05] All the details are set. Now it's just the waiting, and you know what Tom Petty said about the waiting? Oh yeah, I guess the practicing too. But Tom Petty didn't say anything about that. I bet he would if you asked him, though. See you soon! [5.22.05] I've posted press information, as well as artist bios that are linked to the names on the Schedule page. Less than a month to go! [5.9.05] OK, so it took a little longer than I thought. Click on "Schedule" to the right for the official information on the first RealNewMusic festival. (Yes, I realize it's not really a festival yet, but wait until next year!) [4.23.05] I'm just about ready to make the official announcement, but it is happening for sure. It will be on Saturday night, June 18th, so mark your calendars now. [4.18.05] Two of the three ensembles I approached have agreed to perform, and I have a little something else in the works, which I should know soon if it's going to happen. Actual details should appear here in the next week or so. [4.3.05] I approached two of the three ensembles I want to play at the first festival, and it's looking good. Keep checking back for updates. [4.1.05] I talked to the same person mentioned below today. He likes my idea and we're moving forward. Now all I have to do is line of the groups I want for this first concert. It looks like it's going to be one concert on one evening with 2-3 ensembles. Modest beginnings I know, but I have big plans for the years to come. [10.08.04] I talked to somebody about the festival today. He's important to the idea, but I can't say who he is yet, in case my initial idea doesn't pan out. That's news, right? |
