Santa Ana New Music Ensemble

The Santa Ana New Music Ensemble is a group of diverse instrumentalists whose focus is on the performance of new works featuring the music of Southern California based composers. The group performs an annual event hosted by Santa Ana College


Composers:

Jeff Jones has a B.M. degree in guitar performance, and a M.M. degree in musical composition from California State University, at Fullerton, where he studied guitar under Scott Zeidel and composition with Lloyd Rodgers. Jeff has been an active composer in the Southern California area since 1982. His works have been performed for the Music Teachers Association of California, Santa Ana, Mount San Antonio, Cypress Colleges and Cal State University, at Fullerton. He teaches Music History, History of Rock, and Applied Music at Mt. San Antonio College, and Santa Ana College. In 2008 Jeff organized the first annual Santa Ana New Music concert, which features premier performances of new works by Southern California based composers.

Brian Kehlenbach (b. 1958) received his musical training at the University of Connecticut, studying under Hale Smith and Jane Brockman, and at the University of Southern California, studying with Frederick Lesemann and James Hopkins. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from USC, where he was named Outstanding Graduate in Music Theory and Composition in 1991. He was the recipient of the Peter David Faith Memorial Award in Composition, the Jimmy McHugh Composition Prize and the Hans Salter Music Award. Also, his piece, Times of Reflection, was a winning composition in the Betty Freeman Competition of New Music. Additional studies in computer music were undertaken with Charles Dodge at Brooklyn College.

Kehlenbach's works have been presented by the Los Angeles SCREAM festival, the CalArts Contemporary Music Festival, the U.S.C. Contemporary Music Ensemble, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles John Cage Festival, KPFK radio, and many other venues across the country. His orchestra piece, Circumdare, was performed on the Piccolo Spoletto Festival of 1996 by the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and his chamber orchestra piece, In the Land Beyond, Beyond, was commissioned and performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group in 1990. His more recent choral and vocal works have been performed widely at many colleges and churches in the area. Kehlenbach currently teaches music theory, jazz history, and digital music production at Santa Ana College, where he serves as Chair of the Music Department. In 1999, he was named Distinguished Faculty Lecturer.


Lou Warde is active as a composer and educator in the Los Angeles area. He has been commissioned and performed throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Recent commissions have come from the Erato Ensemble, New Music New York, Fauvel String Quartet, Whirlwind Woodwind Quintet, and Santa Ana College. He has been the recipient of many awards and accolades including election into the 2005 Who’s Who of Music. His recent CD, Geometrics, has been well received by both the public and critic. Mr. Warde holds a Bachelor’s degree in choral studies and a Masters degree in composition. He is a competitive cyclist, an avid pilot, and a dedicated father and husband. He is currently on the teaching faculty at Santa Ana College, and resides in Long Beach with his wife and three children.
